          As global concerns about climate change intensify, Qatar is positioning itself as a pioneer in renewable energy innovation.

          According to the Qatar National Vision 2030, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has unveiled Qatar’s National Energy Strategy, targeting an 18% share of renewable energy in the power mix by 2030, up from the current 5%.

          This ambitious plan aims to add 4 GW of large-scale renewable energy capacity, focusing primarily on solar photovoltaic (PV) technology.

          In addition to large-scale solar projects, the strategy aims to integrate up to 200 MW of distributed solar generation by 2030. This initiative seeks to promote localized power generation, reducing the strain on centralized grid infrastructure.

          Furthermore, the strategy plans to reduce the share of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) thermal generation from the current 80% to about 72%, with the remaining 10% coming from interconnection capacity, small-scale conventional, and small-scale renewable sources.

          The plant was constructed in two phases, each with a capacity of 400 megawatts-peak (MWp). Upon completion, the facility boasts a full capacity of 800 MWp. In its first year, Al Kharsaah is expected to produce nearly two million megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity, sufficient to power approximately 55,000 Qatari households. This significant contribution will cover around 10% of Qatar’s peak electricity demand.
