The 33rd edition of the Doha International Book Fair is all set to kick off on May 9, 2024, at the Doha Exhibition & Convention Center. Running until May 18, 2024, the fair promises to be a celebration of knowledge, culture, and diversity under the slogan “With Knowledge, Civilizations Build.”
The Doha International Book Fair is one of the oldest and largest book fairs in the region, gaining international recognition for attracting major publishing houses from around the world.

History
The fair began in 1972 and has since grown into a prestigious event, known for its extensive participation from Arab, Gulf, and foreign countries.
Largest International Participation Yet
This year’s book fair is gearing up to be the largest in its history, with more than 500 publishing houses from 35 countries participating. This extensive international participation underscores the fair’s significance as a global cultural event.
Guest of Honor: Sultanate of Oman
The Sultanate of Oman will be the guest of honour at this year’s fair, showcasing its rich heritage through a dedicated pavilion. Visitors can expect a diverse cultural program highlighting Omani literature, intellectual achievements, and traditional art forms. Live folk and artistic performances will be part of the vibrant showcase.
Strengthening Intellectual Progress
Dr. Ghanem bin Mubarak Al Ali, Assistant Undersecretary for Cultural Affairs at the Ministry of Culture, emphasized the fair’s leading role in supporting intellectual progress, creativity, and literary and knowledge production. He highlighted the significance of the fair as a platform for the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and enlightened ideas.
Prominent Local Participants
The fair also reflects the significant growth of Qatari publishing houses. Local participants include Rosa Publishing House, Dar Al Watad, QU Press, Katara Publishing House, Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU Press), Dar Al Sharq, Dar Al Thaqafa, Dar Napjah, and Dar Nawa, in addition to Lusail University, the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, and Qatar Museums.
Regional and International Presence
Apart from local participants, the fair will also host a distinguished regional, Arab, and international presence. Participating entities include the National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature of the State of Kuwait; the Ministry of Heritage and Culture of Oman; the Sharjah Book Authority; the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center; the Institute of Public Administration in Saudi Arabia; and the Taibah University of Saud Arabia.
Ministries of Culture from Morocco, Algeria, and Yemen, along with the General Egyptian Book Organization, will also be represented. China, Azerbaijan, and several publishers’ associations from Mauritania, Jordan, Turkey, the US, and the UK will participate in the fair.
Highlighting Cultural Diversity
The fair will showcase cultural diversity by featuring eight libraries from the historic Souq El Azbakeya in Egypt, known for their collection of used and rare books. This initiative reflects the organizers’ commitment to attracting historical book markets, similar to featuring Baghdad’s Mutanabbi Street in the previous edition.
Engaging Events for All
The fair’s main stage will be abuzz with seminars, lectures, poetry evenings, and performances. The Lebanese play “Caracalla” and a daily play organized by the Center for Theater Affairs will grace the stage, adding to the cultural richness of the event.
Children’s Oasis
Children’s activities will be a major focus, with the “Children’s Oasis” offering a range of engaging and educational activities to spark young minds creativity and love for learning.
Literary and Intellectual Sessions
The cultural hall will host literary and intellectual sessions, fostering dialogue between authors and readers. The Cultural Salon will organize sessions that open the windows of cognitive dialogue between authors and readers. Book launch ceremonies will also be held throughout the fair.
