Qatar has achieved a significant milestone in its tourism industry by welcoming over 4 million international visitors so far in 2023, the highest number in the past 5 years. This accomplishment underscores the nation’s success in leveraging the momentum from hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Qatar Tourism Authority announced the strong tourism figures, attributing it to streamlining travel procedures and hosting a packed calendar of events. In the lead-up to the World Cup last year, Qatar simplified its visa processes through the Hayya platform. This facilitated tourists accessing visas on arrival – especially for the 95 countries eligible.
Additionally, Qatar promoted itself all year round through diverse marketing campaigns. Events like football tournaments, cultural festivals and concerts ensured tourists had plenty to explore. Saad Al-Kharji, Chairman of the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), expressed pride in Qatar’s growing appeal. He highlighted attractions like miles of coastline, world-class museums and unique destinations catering to different travellers.
Leading the influx are tourists from neighbouring Saudi Arabia, making up 25.3% of total arrivals. Indians account for 10.4% while Germans, British and Kuwaitis each contribute over 3%. The liberal visa policies and accessibility have made Qatar a popular short-break destination for visitors from these feeding markets.
The QTA remains focused on ongoing developments to provide even more opportunities for tourism growth. With major infrastructure like the new Lusail International Stadium and multi-billion dollar cultural and lifestyle projects, Qatar is well-positioned to attract more visitors in the coming years.
