The Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) has launched the full services on the Orange Line and Pink Line of the Lusail Tram, marking a significant milestone in the development of Lusail City’s public transportation system.

The completion of this phase enhances connectivity across Lusail, providing residents and visitors with a sustainable and efficient mode of transport.

This expansion underscores Qatar’s commitment to developing a world-class, integrated, and eco-friendly transportation network.

Lusail and Tram Services

Lusail is situated approximately 23 kilometers north of Doha’s city center. Lusail is designed to be sustainable and self-sufficient, featuring various residential and commercial developments.

The city includes schools, medical centers, shopping malls, and other essential amenities to cater to its residents’ needs. The transportation infrastructure in Lusail is well-developed, featuring the Lusail Tram, formerly known as the Lusail LRT.

This light rail network is a key part of the Lusail urban development project, designed to offer an efficient and affordable way to navigate the city. Notably, the Lusail Tram is the second tram system in Qatar, following the Education City Tram.

The Lusail Tram network connects with the Doha Metro at Legtaifya station on the red line.

From Legtaifya station, passengers can easily reach various destinations within Lusail by transferring to either the orange or pink lines of the Lusail Tram.

This seamless integration between the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram ensures convenient travel for both residents and visitors.

Lusail Tram Services Expansion

Lusail and Tram Services

The latest expansion includes the operation of all stations on the Orange Line and the Pink Line, except for Al Sa’ad Plaza station, which will become operational at a later date.

This move aims to improve accessibility to key locations within Lusail City and support the city’s vision of an eco-friendly urban environment.

Orange Line Stations

Orange Line Stations

The newly opened Orange Line stations are:

  • Naifa
  • Fox Hills – South
  • Downtown Lusail
  • Al Khayl Street
  • Fox Hills – North
  • Crescent Park – North
  • Rawdat Lusail
  • Erkiyah
  • Lusail Stadium
  • Al Yasmeen

Pink Line Stations

Pink Line Stations

The Pink Line stations now in operation are:

  • Legtaifiya
  • Other stations leading up to Seef Lusail – North

These newly opened stations provide direct access to several attractions in Lusail, including the Al Seef area, Crescent Park, Lusail Boulevard, and Al Maha Island, enhancing the city’s appeal as a residential and tourist destination.

Lusail Tram Network Overview

Lusail Tram Network Overview

The Lusail Tram network spans 19 kilometres and consists of four lines: Orange, Pink, Purple, and Turquoise.

This extensive network connects various parts of Lusail City, linking government offices, residential towers, leisure and sports facilities, marinas, and major attractions.

The tram network is designed to offer a seamless and efficient transportation solution, integrating with the Doha Metro to facilitate easy movement between Lusail and other parts of Qatar.

Network Lines and Stations

Orange Line

The Orange Line covers critical areas within Lusail, including residential and commercial hubs, and key attractions like the Lusail Stadium, a focal point for sports events in the city.

Pink Line

The Pink Line connects the northern and southern parts of Lusail, facilitating travel to major destinations such as Legtaifiya, and enhancing the overall connectivity of the tram network.

Future Expansions

The Lusail Tram network will continue to expand, with additional lines and stations planned to further enhance the transportation infrastructure within the city.

This future development will ensure that all areas of Lusail are well-connected, promoting sustainable urban growth.

Lusail Tram Schedule and Service Hours

The Lusail Tram operates seven days a week, maintaining the same service hours as the Doha Metro.

This alignment ensures consistency and convenience for commuters using both transportation systems.

Service Hours

Service Hours
  • Saturday to Wednesday: 5:30 AM to 12:00 Midnight
  • Thursday: 5:30 AM to 1:00 AM
  • Friday: 2:00 PM to 1:00 AM

These extended hours cater to the needs of residents and visitors, providing a reliable transportation option throughout the week.

Fare Structure

The Lusail Tram offers a user-friendly fare system designed to provide affordable and convenient travel options.

Commuters can use the same travel cards as those used on the Doha Metro, ensuring a seamless travel experience across both networks.

The Lusail Tram and Doha Metro offer convenient travel options in Doha. A single journey on the tram or metro costs QR2.

Combining both modes of transport also costs QR2. If you plan to travel extensively, a day pass for QR6 gives you unlimited access to both networks. To use these fare options, you need a travel card, available for QR10.

This card ensures easy reuse for future trips. The unified fare structure makes commuting between tram and metro seamless.

It improves accessibility and affordability for Doha’s commuters. With consistent pricing and convenient pass options, traveling across the city becomes efficient.

Future Prospects

As the Lusail Tram network continues to expand and integrate with other modes of transportation, it is poised to become a linchpin of Qatar’s modern transportation infrastructure.

With its emphasis on sustainability, efficiency, and user-friendliness, the tram network epitomizes Qatar’s commitment to pioneering innovative solutions for urban mobility.

Comfort and Capacity

Lusail Tram trains prioritize passenger comfort and convenience, boasting spacious seating arrangements and a generous capacity to accommodate both standard and family-class passengers.

With 64 seats and a total capacity of 209 passengers per tram, commuters can enjoy a comfortable and stress-free journey across Lusail’s vibrant landscape.

Enhancing Sustainable Transportation

The Lusail Tram is part of Qatar’s broader vision to promote sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.

The tram network utilizes advanced technologies to reduce its environmental footprint and enhance energy efficiency.

Eco-Friendly Features

  • Ground-Level Electric Power Supply: Reduces emissions and enhances energy efficiency.
  • LED Lighting Systems: Lowers energy consumption and provides better illumination.
  • Electric Braking Systems: Improves operational efficiency and safety.

These features make the Lusail Tram an environmentally responsible choice for urban transportation, contributing to Qatar’s sustainability goals.

Promoting Road Safety

Operating trams alongside traffic and pedestrians presents unique challenges.

Qatar Rail has partnered with the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Interior to launch awareness campaigns aimed at promoting road safety and responsible interaction with trams.

Road Safety Campaigns

These campaigns emphasize the importance of adhering to traffic safety guidelines, signs, and signals.

By educating the public on safe practices, Qatar Rail aims to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the tram network, minimizing accidents and enhancing overall safety.

Key Attractions Accessible via Lusail Tram

The Lusail Tram provides direct access to several key attractions within Lusail City, making it easier for residents and visitors to explore the city’s landmarks and leisure facilities.

Major Destinations

  • Al Seef Area: A vibrant waterfront district offering dining, shopping, and recreational activities.
  • Crescent Park: A popular green space ideal for outdoor activities and relaxation.
  • Lusail Boulevard: A bustling commercial and residential area featuring shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
  • Al Maha Island: A premier leisure destination with various attractions and amenities.

By connecting these destinations, the Lusail Tram enhances the livability and attractiveness of Lusail City, supporting its development as a modern urban centre.

To Sum Up

The expansion of the Lusail Tram network represents a significant step forward in Qatar’s efforts to develop an integrated and sustainable public transportation system.

With the full operation of the Orange Line and Pink Line, Qatar Rail is providing residents and visitors of Lusail City with a high-standard, reliable, and eco-friendly mode of transportation.

This development not only improves connectivity within Lusail but also aligns with Qatar’s broader vision of promoting sustainable urban growth and reducing traffic congestion.

By providing residents and visitors with efficient, eco-friendly transportation options, the tram network not only fulfills the immediate needs of commuters but also lays the groundwork for a more vibrant and resilient urban future.

As the tram network continues to expand, it will play a crucial role in shaping the future of transportation in Lusail City, making it a model for modern and sustainable urban living.
