Brief History of Airports in Doha
Doha International Airport (DIA) operated for over 70 years by the end of the 20th century. It faced significant challenges due to land constraints that limited its expansion possibilities.
To address these limitations, a new airport was planned in 2003 and construction began in 2005. The result was Hamad International Airport that is located 5 kilometers east of DIA. It officially opened on May 27, 2014.
This new airport became Qatar’s primary aviation hub, while DIA continued to handle military and diplomatic flights and briefly resumed limited commercial services for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Additionally, Al Udeid Air Base, located southwest of Doha, serves as a key military facility for U.S. and allied forces. Hamad International Airport marks a significant upgrade in Qatar’s aviation infrastructure, highlighting the country’s growing global connectivity and strategic importance.

1- Doha International Airport
Doha International Airport served as Qatar’s primary commercial international airport until the opening of Hamad International Airport in May 2014. Located in the heart of Doha, it was the main gateway to Qatar for decades. After its closure to scheduled commercial traffic, the airport’s site and runway have been repurposed for various important uses.
The Qatar Emiri Air Force, Qatar Amiri Flight, Rizon Jet, Gulf Helicopters, and Qatar Aeronautical College continue to operate from this airport. In preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Doha International Airport briefly resumed commercial operations. On 15 September 2022, it welcomed selected airlines to help handle the increased traffic expected for the event. Despite its secondary role now, the airport remains a critical part of Qatar’s aviation infrastructure.
2- Hamad International Airport
Hamad International Airport is Qatar’s principal international airport and the home base of Qatar Airways, the nation’s flag carrier. Located to the east of Doha, Hamad International replaced Doha International Airport in 2014 as the country’s main aviation hub.
Initially known as New Doha International Airport during its construction, the airport was intended to open in 2008. However, a series of delays pushed its inauguration to 30 April 2014, when a Qatar Airways flight landed ceremonially from Doha International. All airlines, including Qatar Airways, transitioned to the new facility by 27 May 2014.
Hamad International Airport is named after the former Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. It is one of the busiest airports in the Middle East, renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities, luxury shopping, and services that cater to the needs of international travellers.
The airport has since established itself as a central hub in global aviation, connecting flights across continents and serving as a key pillar in Qatar’s transportation infrastructure.
