Qatar is ramping up efforts to position itself as a leading hub for tech startups and innovation in the Middle East. The nation’s development bank, Qatar Development Bank (QDB), has announced the launch of its Startup Qatar Investment Programme to provide funding and support to early-stage tech companies looking to establish or expand operations in Qatar.
The new initiative was unveiled this week under Startup Qatar, a platform created by Invest Qatar to foster the growth of Qatar’s startup ecosystem. Through the programme, QDB will offer funding of up to $500,000 for startups looking to launch in Qatar and up to $5 million for established global startups seeking to scale up their presence in the Qatari market.
Commenting on the launch, QDB CEO Abdulrahman bin Hesham al-Sowaidi explained the strategic importance of supporting tech entrepreneurship and attracting international talent. “QDB aims to position Qatar as a major global hub for tech startups across industries like AI, machine learning and IoT. This new funding programme will enrich our investment ecosystem and enable promising startups to kickstart and expand their business in Qatar,” he stated.
The initiative provides facilitation support and specialised training to help entrepreneurs access new markets and develop technological solutions tailored to Qatar’s needs across sectors like education, healthcare, finance and real estate.
Startups focused on innovative technologies that can drive sustainable economic growth will be prioritised. The programme was timed to coincide with the upcoming Qatar Web Summit 2024 next week, where tech pioneers and investors from around the world will convene.
Interested startups can learn more and apply for funding at the Startup Qatar pavilion at the summit. With this targeted investment programme, Qatar hopes to accelerate the development of emerging technologies and cement its position as the leading startup hub in the Middle East.
