  • South Korea aims to expand its agri-food exports, particularly processed and non-processed food, excluding aquatic products, to Qatar.
  • Korean agri-food products such as corn oil, ramyeon, dubu, processed rice-based products, and kimchi are gaining popularity in Qatar.
  • Both sides are focused on food security, with opportunities for collaboration on smart farming technologies and the export of smart farms.
  • The 2023 amendment to the memorandum of understanding on smart farming aims to diversify technology exchanges and agri-food trade, with support for AgriteQ 2025 in Qatar.

South Korea is actively working to boost its agri-food exports to Qatar, focusing primarily on processed and non-processed food, with the exclusion of aquatic food products. This initiative was discussed in a recent meeting between Song Miryung, South Korea’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and HE Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah al-Attiyah, Qatar’s Minister of Municipality, in Seoul.

During the discussions, both officials explored various ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector, particularly in smart farming. South Korea expressed its interest in collaborating with Qatar to expand the export of Korean agri-food products, a move that aligns with Qatar’s growing demand for diverse food products.

The Minister of Agriculture from South Korea praised Qatar for its innovations in agricultural technologies, especially in increasing the production of vegetables and meat.

This technological advancement presents a promising opportunity for greater cooperation in agricultural development between the two nations. In fact, Qatar is recognized for its commitment to food security and sustainable agriculture, making it an ideal partner for South Korea’s agri-food industry.

Expanding Popular Exports

Among the most popular Korean agri-food exports to Qatar are products such as corn oil and ramyeon (Korean-style instant noodles). In recent years, there has been an increase in the export of other Korean food items like dubu (bean curd), processed rice-based products, and kimchi.

These products have gained significant traction in the Qatari market due to their quality and unique appeal.

The growing interest in Korean food products highlights the potential for further expansion. South Korea is keen to continue supplying a variety of agri-food products, building on the momentum of recent years.

The increased demand for these foods signals the possibility of further collaboration between the two countries in enhancing food variety and availability in Qatar.

Focus on Smart Farming and Technological Exchange

One of the key areas of cooperation discussed during the meeting was the exchange of smart farming technologies. Qatar has shown a strong interest in developing its agricultural sector through smart farming, which is expected to significantly boost the country’s food security efforts.

South Korea, with its advanced agricultural technologies, is well-positioned to assist Qatar in this area. The two countries have already made strides in this direction, with discussions about building a smart-farming innovation complex in Qatar.

The South Korean government has expressed its readiness to support Korean companies in expanding their agri-food exports to Qatar. If Qatar prioritizes investment cooperation for smart farming initiatives, it would strengthen this partnership even further.

South Korea views this opportunity as an essential part of enhancing its agri-food exports and supporting sustainable agricultural development in Qatar.

Potential for Future Collaborations

In addition to the discussions on food exports and smart farming, Qatar’s Minister of Municipality, al-Attiyah, highlighted the recent amendment to the memorandum of understanding between Qatar and South Korea.

The amendment, made in October 2023, is aimed at fostering deeper technological exchange and diversifying trade relations. It also opens up new avenues for enhancing the trade of agri-food products between the two countries.

Moreover, al-Attiyah encouraged Korean companies and the government to actively participate in AgriteQ 2025, an international agricultural and environmental exhibition scheduled for February 2025 in Qatar.

This event will provide a platform for showcasing innovations in agriculture and environmental technologies, and South Korea’s participation is expected to play a vital role in strengthening agricultural ties between the two nations.

Looking Ahead

South Korea’s efforts to expand its agri-food exports to Qatar reflect the growing importance of agricultural collaboration between the two countries. With a focus on smart farming, technological exchange, and increasing food exports, this partnership has the potential to enhance Qatar’s food security and sustainability.

As both nations work toward strengthening their agricultural ties, the future looks promising for a fruitful collaboration in the agri-food sector.
