QatarEnergy recently inaugurated four new LNG vessels as part of its expansive fleet-building initiative, with these ships constructed in South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean shipyards.
The launch marks a significant step in QatarEnergy’s ambitious fleet expansion program, which involves the production of 128 LNG vessels across Korean and Chinese shipyards.
This project represents the largest shipbuilding endeavor in the history of the LNG shipping industry, reinforcing QatarEnergy’s position as a global leader in energy transportation.
The four newly launched vessels, named “Id’asah,” “Nuaijah,” “Umm Swayyah,” and “Lebrethah,” were unveiled in two separate naming ceremonies held in Geoje, South Korea. The events celebrated the collaborative effort between QatarEnergy and its South Korean partners, underscoring their mutual commitment to advancing the clean energy agenda on a global scale.
Naming Ceremony at Samsung Heavy Industries
The first naming ceremony took place at Samsung Heavy Industries, where the vessel “Id’asah” was introduced as the first LNG ship to be completed by Samsung for this program.
Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, HE Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, attended the event and highlighted the importance of QatarEnergy’s growing partnership with Samsung Heavy Industries and JP Morgan Asset Management’s Global Transportation Group.
Minister Al-Kaabi emphasized that this milestone signifies more than just the delivery of a ship; it represents a strengthened alliance dedicated to providing cleaner energy solutions worldwide.
In his address, Al-Kaabi commended Samsung Heavy Industries for their high-quality craftsmanship and the shipowner, a subsidiary of JP Morgan Asset Management’s Global Transportation Group, for their dedication and commitment to the project. The involvement of JP Morgan underscores the global financial backing and strategic vision behind QatarEnergy’s extensive LNG fleet expansion.
Hanwha Ocean Shipyard Naming Ceremony
The second ceremony was held at the Hanwha Ocean Shipyard, where three vessels—“Nuaijah,” “Umm Swayyah,” and “Lebrethah”—were officially named. These ships represent the first set of LNG vessels produced by Hanwha Ocean for QatarEnergy.
With advanced features focused on fuel efficiency and emission reduction, these ships will soon join QatarEnergy’s global fleet, embarking on journeys to transport clean energy across the world.
During the Hanwha ceremony, Minister Al-Kaabi highlighted the importance of these vessels in promoting environmentally sustainable energy transportation. He referred to the occasion as a “historic moment” as these technologically advanced vessels prepared to commence their journeys.
Equipped with state-of-the-art systems to optimize fuel consumption and minimize emissions, these LNG ships underscore QatarEnergy’s dedication to greener energy solutions and its role in driving sustainable practices in the maritime sector.
Strategic Partnerships and Global Commitment
Minister Al-Kaabi extended his appreciation to the Korean KGL Consortium members, including Pan Ocean, H-Line Shipping, and SK Shipping, who contributed significantly to the project’s success.
He also recognized Hanwha Ocean for their unwavering commitment to quality and excellence. These partnerships underscore QatarEnergy’s strategic approach to LNG transportation, ensuring that each phase of the shipbuilding process aligns with the highest standards in quality and sustainability.
The events were attended by senior executives from both shipyards, shipowner companies, representatives of the Korean government, and executives from QatarEnergy and QatarEnergy LNG. This gathering highlighted the strong multinational collaboration fueling QatarEnergy’s ambitious fleet expansion.
A New Chapter in LNG Shipping
The addition of these four LNG vessels represents a major step in QatarEnergy’s commitment to cleaner energy transportation. With this historic fleet expansion, QatarEnergy is not only enhancing its capacity to deliver LNG worldwide but also leading the industry toward a more sustainable future.
The project embodies a collective global effort to meet rising energy demands while prioritizing environmental responsibility, positioning QatarEnergy at the forefront of the LNG shipping industry.
