  • The “BeSolar” service allows subscribers to adopt solar energy systems without disrupting their existing electricity supply from Kahramaa.
  • The initiative aims to generate 200 megawatts of solar energy by 2030, aligning with Qatar’s broader renewable energy targets.
  • Subscribers can reduce their electricity bills through net billing, offering significant returns on investment, especially for those with high electricity consumption.
  • The service is open to all Kahramaa subscribers, with a preliminary feasibility assessment required to determine the viability of solar energy system installation.

As the global demand for clean and sustainable energy grows, solar energy has emerged as a leading solution. Among the various solar technologies, Photovoltaic (PV) cells are the fastest-growing energy source worldwide.

Recognizing the importance of transitioning to renewable energy, Qatar has made significant strides in reducing carbon emissions by expanding its use of clean energy. A recent development in this effort is the introduction of the “BeSolar” service by the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).

Introduction of the “BeSolar” Service

Kahramaa has launched the “BeSolar” initiative, designed to facilitate the installation of distributed solar energy systems. This move aligns with the goals set forth in the Qatar National Renewable Energy Strategy, which aims to diversify energy sources and enhance sustainability.

Eng. Abdulrahman Ibrahim Al Baker, Director of Production Planning and Business Development at Kahramaa, highlighted that the new service is intended to encourage subscribers to adopt solar energy systems.

By 2030, the initiative aims to generate 200 megawatts from these distributed systems, contributing to Qatar’s broader renewable energy targets.

Objectives and Benefits of the “BeSolar” Service

The “BeSolar” service serves multiple objectives. First, it aims to bolster energy security and diversity within Qatar by promoting the use of solar energy. Second, it seeks to enhance environmental sustainability by reducing the reliance on traditional, carbon-intensive energy sources.

Eng. Al Baker emphasized that the service is designed to improve and diversify Kahramaa’s offerings, particularly in the realm of renewable energy. This initiative also aims to stimulate local market development and offer economic benefits through reduced electricity bills for subscribers.

Impact on Current Electricity Services

Eng. Al Baker assured that the “BeSolar” service would seamlessly integrate with existing Kahramaa services. Subscribers can opt into this service without disrupting their current electricity supply.

The service will be optional and can be requested through the same channels used for existing electricity services, whether for new connections or load strengthening. This approach ensures that subscribers can adopt solar energy systems without any complications affecting their regular electricity services.

Global Success Stories and Local Implementation

Drawing from international experiences, Eng. Al Baker noted that similar initiatives in other countries have proven successful. Many Gulf States, for example, have implemented distributed renewable energy systems with notable benefits, including reduced electricity grid loads, lower subscriber bills, and enhanced environmental sustainability.

These successes highlight the potential benefits of adopting such services in Qatar. By leveraging global models, Qatar aims to achieve similar economic and social advantages, including fostering a thriving local market for the private sector.

Availability and Feasibility

The “BeSolar” service is available to all Kahramaa subscribers. However, before proceeding, each subscriber needs to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of installing a solar energy system.

Factors such as roof area and current electricity consumption must be assessed to determine the viability of the system. Subscribers can conduct this evaluation independently or with the help of specialized companies. This preliminary assessment will guide whether the subscriber should move forward with the installation.

Application Process and Timeline

Kahramaa has already released initial details about the “BeSolar” service on its website and social media platforms. This includes information on technical requirements, supplier qualifications, and contractor mechanisms.

The organization will soon announce the start date for receiving subscriber applications and provide further instructions on how to apply. This phased approach ensures that potential users have all necessary information before committing to the service.

Economic Considerations and Return on Investment

The cost of installing a solar energy system depends on several factors, including system size, integration with building design, and the manufacturer of the components.

The return on investment (ROI) is influenced by factors such as current electricity consumption, subscriber category (government, commercial, residential), and the specific tariffs and financing terms in place.

Subscribers with high electricity consumption and higher tariffs can expect a significant return on investment, thanks to the net billing mechanism, which allows them to offset their energy costs with the solar power they generate.

Looking ahead, Qatar’s “BeSolar” service represents a significant advancement in the country’s renewable energy efforts. By encouraging the installation of solar energy systems, Kahramaa aims to support Qatar’s sustainability goals and enhance the overall energy landscape.

With its focus on integrating solar energy into everyday life, the “BeSolar” initiative promises to contribute positively to both environmental and economic outcomes in Qatar.
